Becoming an electrician in Texas requires simply a social security and an application fee. However, to move forward in your career as a journeyman electrician or a master electrician, you must pass the electrical NEC exam.

How many questions are on the NEC exam?
This is one of the first things we get asked. The number of questions changes every few years but as of the date of this article the breakup is as follows.
Texas Master Electrician
This exam is broken up into 2 sections. The NEC Knowledge Portion and the Calculations Portion. If you fail one of these portions, you only need to retake the portion that you failed.
NEC Knowledge Portion
75 Items (including 5 Non-Scored Items)
150 Minutes - 70% Correct to Pass
Calculations Portion
33 Items (including 3 Non-Scored Items)
170 Minutes - 70% Correct to Pass
Texas Journeyman Electrician
80 Scored Items
240 Minutes - 70% Correct to Pass
5 Non-Scored Items - 20 Minutes
How do I prepare for an electrician NEC exam?
To prepare for the electrical exam you will have to make yourself a study plan. The most important thing for you to do is either enroll in a seminar, class, or get practice exam workbooks.
Here is a loose example of what a strong study plan should look like. Set goals and objectives then rank them in order from weakest to strongest areas then make a time plan based on them.
You will know what your weakest areas are by taking practice exams. This is why you have to invest on a seminar or workbooks.

By taking practice exams on workbooks this gives you an idea of what to look for in the electrical test for better results. The practice NEC exams help you become familiar with the NEC because you will be flipping around looking for answers.
Be careful! Do not waste your time memorizing questions this will not help improve exam results.
Getting your electrical license is a big step, this often means your paychecks will start looking healthier soon. You have one year to pass the exam before your application expires. If you plan accordingly, you should be able to get this done in just a few months.
