If you are preparing for the electrical exam, make sure to review the state's candidate information bulletin so that you can purchase exactly what is approved.  Most states only approve the softbound/paperback version of the NEC book.  In the state of Texas, for example, the only book you may use is the latest version of the NEC book, softbound.  This particular book for Texas may be highlighted and tabbed.  You may also have some written notes in ink throughout the book.

By the way guys, some of you have cool employers that provide you with your own copy of the NEC book and some of you don't.  For those of you who have to buy your own book, check out the latest approved NEC book online to get your own copy.

Don't buy your book until you know exactly what you can bring into the examiner's room otherwise they will ask you to sit through the exam without your book and using their plain book.

Best of Luck!
