Recent updates in the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) have redefined how weight-supporting ceiling receptacles (WSCR) and attachment fittings are identified and used in residential wiring.

According to Electrical Contractor Magazine, the revised definitions in Article 100 and changes in sections 314.27(E) and 422.18(2) aim to improve safety and simplify installations for ceiling-suspended fans and luminaires.

The NEC now distinguishes between traditional receptacles and WSCRs—devices designed to both power and physically support electrical equipment.

This change allows for easier transitions between fixtures using compatible fittings while maintaining secure, code-compliant support.

The clarified language ensures that electricians use only listed, weight-rated components in ceiling boxes and accurately calculate box fill requirements.

These updates mark a major step in aligning installation standards with modern home design and technology, helping electricians ensure safer and more adaptable ceiling wiring systems.

Changes to New Wiring Methods: Weight-supporting ceiling receptacle use in homes

The 2017 National Electrical Code introduced a new type of receptacle different from what most electrical professionals and homeowners expected.

This prompted a change to the definition in Article 100:

“A contact device installed at the outlet for the connection of an attachment plug, or for the direct connection of electrical utilization equipment designed to mate with the corresponding contact device. A single receptacle is a single contact device with no other contact device on the same yoke. A multiple receptacle is two or more contact devices on the same yoke.”

This new receptacle permits users to transition from one type of luminaire or ceiling paddle fan to another with a simple twist of the attachment fitting.
