Austin labor and city leaders revealed a new climate and jobs plan aimed at decarbonizing city buildings, KXAN reports.

The proposal lists 74 strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and suggests major energy upgrades across municipal properties.

Under the blueprint, labor unions expect the plan to generate hundreds of local jobs in trades like electrical work, HVAC, and retrofitting. The Texas Climate Jobs Project says converting 104 city buildings to cleaner systems could save Austin up to $4.42 million annually.

City and labor partners argue this approach delivers both sustainability and opportunity for skilled workers. As Austin pushes toward a net-zero future, electricians and other tradespeople may find growing demand for projects that blend climate goals with infrastructure upgrades.
